Abstract

The research aimed to identify the level of farmers' knowledge of scientific recommendations related to the selection and use of pesticides in Beygee District/Salah al-Din Governorate in general, and to identify the level of farmers' knowledge of scientific recommendations related to the selection and use of agricultural pesticides in each field of research. The research area included the agricultural divisions in Beygee District, namely (Beygee Agricultural Division, Al-Hajjaj, Makhoul, Al-Siniya, and Al-Zawiya). A simple random sample of 45% of the agricultural divisions was drawn, consisting of two agricultural divisions (Beygee Agricultural Division and Al-Hajjaj Agricultural Division), with a total of 568 farmers. A proportional random sample of 25% of the total farmers in each agricultural division was taken, with a total of 143 respondents. Data from 140 farmers were analyzed, and three questionnaires were deleted due to the lack of objectivity of the answer. The questionnaire was used as a data collection tool, a multiple-choice test was prepared that included 45 test items. Validity was calculated by presenting the questionnaire to specialized experts to provide their comments and suggestions. A preliminary test was conducted on a sample size of 30 respondents. Reliability was calculated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, which reached (0.86), and validity was calculated at (0.93). It showed a weakness in the level of farmers’ knowledge in general, as well as a weakness in knowledge of scientific recommendations in the following areas (when choosing the pesticide and before use, during spraying the pesticide, after spraying the pesticide, during transporting and storing pesticides), while the result of the level of knowledge in the field of pesticide poisoning was low and tended to rise. The research recommended the need to intensify educational and training guidance efforts and provide farmers with scientific bulletins and magazines related to pesticides and the need to care for the environment and protect it from pollution and preserve human health.
