Abstract

A field trial was carried out during spring season of 2016 at the field experiment of field
crops department, college of agriculture-university of Baghdad/AL-Jadiriya.The
objective was to investigate the effect of seed priming and withholding water at certain
growth stages on growth, grain yield and its components, quality properties,water
consumption and water use efficiency of sorghum(sorghum bicolor(L.)Moench) variety
Bhoth70.The nested design with three replicates was used, where blocks were specified
for withholding irrigation water treatments, during plant growth stages until 50% of
depletion of available water.They were: full irrigation(I1),withholding water at 5 leaves
stage (I2),withholding water at the appearance of last folded leaf(I3),withholding water
at 50% flowering (I4),withholding water at two growth stages I3 +I4 (I5) and
withholding water at three growth stages I2+I3+I4(I6).Within each block, seed priming
treatments were laid out. They were:Gibberllic acid (600mg L-1),Kinetin(100mg L
1),Ascorbic acid(30mg L-1) and un primed seeds (dry seed as control). the results
indicated. All seed priming treatments increased the field emergence percentage
compared with dry seeds with GA3 treatment giving the highest averages of field
emergence (71.33%), plumule length (7.65cm), seedling dry weight (17.55mg), plant
height (183.42cm). kinetin treatment achieved the highest value (11.38 cm) of radicle
length , flag leaf area (284.88 cm) , flag leaf dry weight (3.36gm).
